The phrase or sentence saying that “anyone can design” would surely cause enraged feelings from many designers as this has been said way too often. One who has an idea or a plan to a certain creativity of the project or matter does not equate to one being a professional designer.

As stated in my notes,

Having a Design Idea ≠ Being a Professional Designer

Not only that, another statement I would like addressed is that designer is the occupation like any other. You could take the example of many other occupations. Hence, for example, if you could cook or have the ability to come up with an excellent dish for your dinner, it does not make you a chef. Same goes when you track down all your spendings and make a balancing sheet at the end of every month, that doesn’t make you an accountant either.

When it comes to being a DESIGNER,

  • Uses design thinking during the process

  • Spent years to develop skills and gain experience

  • Possesses high design knowledge

  • Has polished skills

Designs created by designer also,

  • Gives higher value and quality in its outcome

  • Produces much more purposeful idea

  • Actually “creates” and not just based on “do” or “plan”

  • Much more refined and impactful in design specifications due to the mindset or the design mentality
